The Experience

One of the must-visit spots on the island is Miguel Hidalgo Street, the main pedestrian drag in Isla Mujeres. This lively walking street is packed with restaurants, bars, shops, and street vendors, making it the cultural and social heart of the island. It's the perfect place to grab a meal, do a little shopping, or enjoy some people-watching — especially in the evening when the energy ramps up.

Isla Mujeres is one of those rare places we keep going back to. It gives you the full island vibe — turquoise waters, laid-back culture, fresh air — yet it's only a short flight to Cancún from most U.S. cities. The ferry ride from Cancún to the island is also part of the fun, as long as the timing works with your flight. One trip, we had a once-in-a-lifetime taxi ride racing us from the airport to the ferry — not for the faint of heart, but we made it just in time!

Just a short ferry ride from Cancún, Isla Mujeres offers a tranquil escape with its turquoise waters and relaxed atmosphere. Our stay at Hotel Ixchel, located just 15 yards from Playa Norte, provided easy access to the beach and stunning sunsets. The hotel's proximity to the beach made it an ideal spot for lounging and enjoying the clear, waist-deep waters.

Exploring the island by golf cart is a must. While not necessary every day, renting one for a day or two allows you to see the island's diverse landscapes. Remember, drinking and driving a golf cart is illegal, and local authorities do enforce this law.

A highlight of our trip was visiting Garrafon Natural Reef Park. The park offers activities like zip-lining, snorkeling, and swimming in large pools, making it a great day for families. While the food is typical all-inclusive fare, opting for the upgraded package enhanced our experience.

For a unique cultural moment, we also made a stop at the colorful Rainbow Stairs in the La Gloria neighborhood. It's a popular photo op, painted with bright colors and positive messages — but be aware, it’s located in a local residential area that’s a bit rougher than Playa Norte. Still, it’s worth a quick visit for a picture and a glimpse of everyday life on the island.

Where We Stayed

🏨 Hotel Ixchel – Playa Norte

Hotel Ixchel is our go-to accommodation on Isla Mujeres. While not a 5-star luxury resort, its unbeatable location just steps from Playa Norte makes it perfect for beach lovers. The hotel offers comfortable rooms and a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for unwinding after a day of exploration.

Eat and Drink

Rooster Café

A must-visit for breakfast, Rooster Café serves delicious food and standout mimosas. It's the perfect spot to start your day before hitting the beach.

Tarzan's Beach Club

This small, round beach bar is a great place to grab a beer or cocktail while taking a break from the water. If you're lucky, you'll meet Tarzan himself.

Churrossik Park – Hidalgo Street

A must-stop churro cart located at the north end of Hidalgo Street. It's perfect for a late-night sweet treat with multiple fillings and local flair. If you see it, stop. You won't regret it.

Stingray Bar

The food is just okay, but this place is all about the vibe. Sit on swings at the bar, enjoy drinks, dance, and join the karaoke. It gets wild later in the night — in the best way.

Samura Jungle Bar

We loved the hibachi here. It's a bit more intense and fun than your typical Benihana — with chefs who go all out on the fire and entertainment. Great for a lively dinner with a twist.

Tips for Travelers

- Stay on Playa Norte: This beach is second to none, and staying nearby enhances your island experience.

- Rent a Golf Cart: Explore the island at your own pace, but always drive responsibly.

- Use the Isla Chicks App: For up-to-date information on activities and a detailed map of Isla Mujeres, this app is worth the investment.

- Skip the Ice Bar: The experience doesn't live up to the hype, with subpar drinks and unpleasant amenities.

- ATM Access is Limited: There are only two ATMs on the islet, so plan ahead and bring enough cash if needed.
